Gauteng warns courier drivers over rise in hijackings: The Gauteng Department of Community Safety has urged courier companies and delivery drivers to be extra vigilant following an increase in hijackings targeting courier vehicles across the province. Drivers are advised to stick to planned routes, avoid isolated areas, stay alert for suspicious activity, and use secure delivery verification processes. Courier companies are encouraged to strengthen security by installing tracking devices, maintaining regular communication with drivers, conducting route risk assessments, providing hijacking response training, and implementing clear emergency protocols. The department says law enforcement continues to intensify operations using e-Policing technology, including CCTV, helicopters and e-Panic systems. Recent operations include: Winchester Hills, Johannesburg: Five suspects were arrested and one was fatally wounded after a hijacked company vehicle was recovered. Police also seized three suspect vehicles and an unlicensed firearm with ammunition. Reiger Park, Boksburg: Two suspects linked to courier robberies and other violent crimes were fatally wounded during a shootout with law enforcement. Two vehicles, unlicensed firearms and ammunition were recovered. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant when receiving deliveries and to report hijackings or suspicious activity to SAPS via the Crime Stop number (08600 10111) or the MySAPS App.
