RTMC WARNS MOTORISTS AS SNOWFALL CLOSES MAJOR ROUTES The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and postpone non-essential journeys as severe winter weather continues to disrupt road conditions across several provinces. Heavy snowfall, black ice, sleet, freezing rain and poor visibility are creating hazardous conditions, particularly along mountain passes and major routes. MAJOR ROAD CLOSURES Eastern Cape • N6 Penhoek Pass – closed between Komani (Queenstown) and Jamestown. • N9 Lootsberg Pass – closed between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg. • R58 Barkly Pass – closed between Elliot and Barkly East. • Boesmanshoek Pass – closed between Sterkstroom and Molteno. KwaZulu-Natal / Free State • N3 – closed between Estcourt and Harrismith. Motorists are advised not to travel to KwaZulu-Natal via the N3. • R74 Oliviershoek Pass – closed between Harrismith and Bergville. • R74 Greytown/Colenso Road – closed due to heavy snowfall. • R103 and Tugela Toll Plaza – completely closed. • R617 – closed between Kokstad and Underberg. • Van Reenen Pass – extremely hazardous due to black ice. Mpumalanga • Long Tom Pass (R37) – completely closed after multiple vehicles became stranded. Western Cape • Swartberg Pass – closed due to snow. • Mont Rochelle/Franschhoek Road – closed due to snow.
Safety
Six Bangladeshi nationals died in a fire at a shop in Queenstown Eastern Cape during the early hours of the morning. The victims were reportedly asleep when the blaze broke out at around 3am. A seventh Bangladeshi national was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital. The cause of the fire has not yet been disclosed.
