Residents in Simmerfield, Wychwood, Primrose and surrounding areas on the East Rand say they were left terrified by an apparent turf war involving “Zama Zamas” at the Simmer and Jack dump on Main Reef Road, Germiston. Residents reported multiple gunshots between about 17:40 and 22:30, saying the shootings are part of an ongoing problem. They claim “Zama Zamas” are regularly seen crossing streets carrying bags, being collected by vehicles and moving openly through the dump and surrounding streets. Residents say they have repeatedly petitioned authorities and called for intervention, including military deployments and the temporary closure of the dump, but feel little has changed. Some residents say bullets have landed in properties, walls and roofs, while previous daytime shootings have forced schoolchildren to hide under their desks. Residents say they feel helpless and increasingly fearful, and are asking authorities when decisive action will be taken to address the violence and illegal mining in the area.
