ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 31 MAY 2026 POWER OUTAGE AFFECTING PARTS OF NORTHERN AND CENTRAL DURBAN The eThekwini Municipality is aware of a power outage at the 275/132 kV Ottawa Substation, which has affected sections of the northern and central parts of the City's electricity network, leaving several areas without power. Areas from Durban North through to Tongaat have been impacted by the interruption. A team from the City's Energy Management Directorate has been dispatched to the substation to conduct an on-site investigation. Preliminary findings indicate that the Directorate is experiencing a loss of 300 megawatts of supply due to the loss of both incoming Eskom feeds on the Northern Network, coupled with multiple trips at the Ottawa Substation. Restoration of supply is expected by approximately 8.30pm. The Municipality apologises for the inconvenience caused and appeals to affected residents and businesses for patience while teams work diligently to restore electricity supply as safely and as quickly as possible. The public will be kept informed of any significant developments through the City's official social media platforms and communication channels.
