[POLICE INTERCEPT RECKLESS DRIVER, SEIZED TWO UNLICENSED FIREARMS ON THE R72 PORT ALFRED]
Vigilant policing and swift collaboration between #SAPS Port Alfred #CrimePrevention Unit (CPU) and local traffic officials led to the arrest of a suspect, a 32-year-old man, and the confiscation of two unlicensed firearms with filed-off serial numbers along the R72 on Monday 10/08 afternoon.
It is alleged that at approximately 13:30 on Monday, 10 August 2026, members of the Ndlambe Traffic Department requested urgent backup from the SAPS Port Alfred Crime Prevention Unit (CPU). Traffic officials had spotted a white Volkswagen Polo with no front registration plate driving recklessly, overtaking on barrier lines, and disregarding stop signs while travelling on the R72 between Kenton-on-Sea and Port Alfred. SAPS members immediately responded to the call. With the assistance of the traffic officers, they successfully intercepted and stopped the targeted vehicle.
Upon obtaining consent from the driver, who was the sole occupant, the police officers conducted a thorough search of the vehicle. While the boot was clear, a search of the interior led to a significant discovery. Members discovered two pistols and two magazines hidden inside a drawer beneath the driver's seat. Members of the Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) were called to process the scene, where it was established that the serial numbers on both firearms had been filed off. The driver was immediately arrested and charged with the illegal possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition. The seized firearms have been secured in exhibit bags and will be forwarded to the forensic science laboratory for ballistic testing to determine if they were used in the commission of other crimes.
The suspect is expected to appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate's Court soon.
