HEALTH RISK: CONTAMINATED WATER The first flush of water entering dry pipes dislodges brown sediment, rust, mud, and stagnant bacterial biofilm from the pipe walls. Drinking this water or using it for cooking can cause severe gastrointestinal illness and stomach bugs. 🛠️ MANDATORY SAFETY ACTIONS: • DO NOT drink the water, brush your teeth, or wash dishes while it is discoloured. • Run your outside garden tap for 2 to 3 minutes until the water flows completely clear. • As a safety precaution, BOIL all drinking and cooking water for at least 1 full minute during the first 24 hours of restoration. 💥 2. PLUMBING RISK: AIR LOCKS & PIPE BURSTS Dry distribution lines trap massive pockets of highly compressed air. When high-pressure water rushes back in, it slams these air pockets through your home plumbing. This pressure shock (known as water hammer) can violently burst indoor geysers, crack plastic pipes inside walls, and shatter toilet valves. 🛠️ MANDATORY SAFETY ACTIONS: • Keep your main property boundary stop-cock closed, or open it very SLOWLY and halfway at first to let air hiss out gently. • Do not open indoor taps fully until the air has safely bled out of the system. • Check your water meter immediately after restoration; if the dial is spinning fast while all your taps are closed, you have a hidden pipe burst. 🔥 3. ELECTRICAL RISK: GEYSER ELEMENT BURNOUT If your geyser tank drained or filled with air pockets during the water crisis, turning on the power will instantly burn out the heating element.
