ETHEKWINI NEWSFLASH PUBLIC NOTICE 20 JUNE 2026 PLANNED SHUTDOWN OF THE SOUTHERN AQUEDUCT Residents and businesses are advised of a planned water supply interruption in areas supplied by the Southern Aqueduct on Tuesday, 23 June from 6 AM to 18:00. The City’s Water Operations will undertake a planned shutdown of the Southern Aqueduct bulk water infrastructure to enable contractors to carry out preparatory work for the new Southern Aqueduct Pipeline Project. This work forms part of the ongoing upgrade of the 24-kilometre Southern Aqueduct bulk pipeline, which is aimed at improving the long-term reliability of water supply across parts of the municipality. The shutdown will allow for the scouring of relevant sections of the aqueduct and enable contractors to undertake planned tie-in works between the existing pipeline and the newly constructed Southern Aqueduct pipeline. It is anticipated that all planned works will be completed on Tuesday, 23 June and that the system will be restored by 18:00. The technical team will continuously monitor reservoir levels during the shutdown. Depending on water demand and reservoir storage levels, some reservoir outlets may be temporarily closed to preserve available storage and minimise system recovery times.
