⚠️ | *POSSIBLE DISRUPTION TO MUNICIPAL SERVICES* - 29 July 2026 @ 13h00 Dear Residents, I want to give residents an early heads-up regarding possible further disruptions to municipal services across Johannesburg. Following today's significant disruption to Pikitup operations, information being received and concerns being raised within the DA Johannesburg Caucus suggest that the labour-related difficulties may not necessarily be limited to Pikitup. There are indications that labour tensions involving SAMWU may be affecting employees across several City entities and departments. I have also received reports that Johannesburg Water operations are being affected by a possible go-slow in parts of the City. I want to stress that the broader situation has not yet been officially confirmed by the City, and I therefore do not want to present speculation as fact. However, enough pieces are beginning to fit together that I believe residents should be made aware of the possibility of further disruption rather than only finding out once services are affected. Information currently circulating suggests that the tensions relate, at least in part, to outstanding PFA back-payments expected by employees. There are further concerns that ongoing union meetings and possible unofficial go-slow action could increasingly affect municipal operations. At this stage, there is also concern that the situation could escalate further should the underlying dispute remain unresolved. What **is** already evident is that Pikitup operations have been severely affected today, with the Roodepoort Depot advising that normal collection activities have essentially ground to a halt due to employees attending a SAMWU meeting. Whether similar disruptions will materialise more broadly across other City services remains to be seen. I am sharing this **not to cause unnecessary alarm**, but to keep residents informed about what we are beginning to pick up behind the scenes.
